Karate (5-8yrs Class) - A Satisfied Parent

Ian is amazing with our boys, one is autistic and one is very shy, he is a great role model and his sessions are brilliantly planned to keep the boys training whilst enjoying great team games, totally recommended A++++

Thanks for last weeks' class - you made me feel very welcome, and a 50% increase in the force of my punch in just a few minutes training is pretty impressive! :) I am keen to become a member and train weekly at Rooksdown with you (maybe more often if I can manage it)

Private 1 to 1 Class - A Satisfied Parent & Student

Ed really enjoyed the session and although a teenager of few words said it was all new to him and he learnt a lot.  He felt the session was fun as well as useful and you had a very relaxed and friendly manner. I thought the session was very well structured and you obviously have a great deal of experience and knowledge. It was particularly good that you talked about real life situations

We are extremely pleased with how well our Son has come on as a whole since starting karate. Demonstrating more self control, discipline and improved listening skills. He really enjoys each session and is keen to work hard towards grading.

PE Teacher - Andy Kimber

Ian proved to be a competent and enthusiastic instructor to children throughout the sessions that he took in our secondary school. He is very reliable and a passionate practitioner who engages those with his methods in martial arts and self-defence skills. I would thoroughly recommend him to any organisation

Combat Martial Arts Class
A Satisfied Student

Ian's a great instructor and he's got a real passion for teaching, I've been training with him for 2 months now and he's got a lot to teach about real life situations and how to deal with the psychology around them and not just teaching techniques but getting to pressure test them as realistically and safely as possible it's also great to be able to test out how strong my punching is getting and seeing how stronger it's getting week on week through restrictive training. I've had to look at my lifestyle recently and change a few habits and since joining Ian's class it's helping my weight drop down as well as improving my cardio strength. I can reflect at the first couple of weeks and see how far I've already come.

The techniques and skills Ian is teaching are genuine and proven to work, they aren't just out of a book and Ian himself is going back to his teachers and learning new concepts, he's not content with just passing on what he's learnt but also what he's learning , The Approach is something we've worked on recently and it's got some great techniques to it. I can recommend Ian's classes to anyone who is serious about defending themselves and having some fun at the same time.

Absolutely great self defense training Ian. A real eye opener on the real life situations! Interesting techniques and theory behind it, which is equally important. It may really save someone's life and help to protect family. Highly recommended. Thanks!

Ladies Only Class - A Satisfied Student

From a fair, slightly fat and forty-ish person who thought this was not possible for her...

I have been studying with Ian and Julie since September (how time flies!) and yes, I confess, I am now an addict - this is a unique martial arts programme, exactly what I was looking for in that this focuses on 'real life' situations, skills and the psychology to underpin it.

Ian's awesome MA skills and patience have enabled me to learn effective techniques that I KNOW I can implement, to understand how people behave and react ( including myself!) and has instilled tremendous confidence, self-awareness and a hunger to learn LOTS more ....life-changing stuff, believe me.

I would encourage anyone who is seeking something different to the 'usual' MA class, and indeed those who already attend a particular skills MA to to come along, expand your horizons, and give this a try.

I sincerely hope Ian's new school goes from strength to strength, and I certainly plan to continue to be a part of this unique empowering experience. Thanks Ian and Julie !

A Satisfied Mum and her Son

My son aged 7 and I have just sat our first self protection class with Ian and it was great fun and an interesting learning experience.

Ian is very honest and patient (an absolute must when it comes to me and my son!) and a real joy to be taught by, he is obviously very passionate and well trained in what he does and this really comes across in his classes.

I would recommend to anyone to give this a go and to gain the opportunity to learn the best way to protect yourself and your family by someone who really knows his stuff.

Thank you Ian, see you at the next class!!

Al Peasland - 5th Dan BCA Senior Instructor

I've known Ian for several years now and have had the pleasure of teaching and training with him on many of my Martial Arts and Self Protection seminars.

Ian has a wealth of experience from a traditional martial arts background and is a shining example of all the positive things that "the arts" can offer. Humility, Respect, Kindness, Patience, Strength of Character are just a few of Ian's traits that make him a fantastic Karateka and Martial Arts instructor.

Always keen to learn and take on new challenges, Ian practices what he preaches and I am more than happy to recommend Ian and his Self Defence classes.

I have known Ian through our shared love and training of Karate for 12 years now. He is an extremely dedicated martial artist and practises what he preaches through his actions in all aspects of his life.

Ian was an Assistant Instructor at my Karate Club for several years assisting with both our senior classes (age 7 - adult) and also the Tiny Tiger section (ages 4-8 years). When my husband and myself were on holiday we knew that the club was in safe hands and that the students would receive a good, well constructed and full lesson from Ian which they benefited from.

I wish him every success in his new venture.

Robert Sidoli - (former) KWF/JSKA 'A' class examiner

I first met Ian Rand in 1997 I was asked to conduct a JKA Shodan examination for the Hampshire Shotokan Karate at Sun Life in Basingstoke.

When I arrived I saw the two candidates. Both were nervous but one was clearly 'up for it' showing what I was hoping to see from people stepping from Mudansha to Yudansha (non dan grade holders and those at 'black belt rank) - a hunger and determination. Ian threw himself into the grading holding nothing back. Every move was filled with desire, intensity, and spirit.

Ian has now decided to progress his martial arts career by stepping into the world of teaching. The attributes that he has shown as a student, such as humility, perseverance, and respect; combined with his personal traits of humility, patience, and empathy will make him a sought after instructor, as he offers skills from his physical training combined with a character many will find unique in today's martial arts world. He is clearly not looking for commercial gain, but to give back some of what he has learned on his journey in the Martial arts.

I am sure that Ian will continue to throw his heart and soul into his training and research, and doubtless will do the same as an instructor.

I wish him every success.
